MADRID, March 11 (Reuters) - European Player of the Year
Luis Figo has attacked UEFA for its decision to suspend and fine his Real Madrid
team mate Raul for a handball goal against Leeds United last week.
'The players are indignant about a decision that makes no sense at all,' Figo
was quoted as saying in the Spanish media on Sunday.
Raul scored Real's opening goal in their 3-2 Champions League win on Tuesday
by turning a Figo free-kick into the Leeds net with his hand.
UEFA's disciplinary board has since banned the player for one game and fined
him 20,000 Swiss francs ($12,090).
Figo hit out at UEFA officials saying they lacked playing experience.
'The people taking these decisions have never played football,' the
Portuguese international told reporters. 'It is very easy for them to impose
certain rule from their offices.'
Figo said the UEFA ruling had created a dangerous precedent and doubted
whether their stance on unsporting behaviour would be applied equally in all
matches.
'UEFA have created a dangerous precedent. If they punish a player for this,
how are they going to deal with something really serious?
'It is very easy for UEFA to come and see Real Madrid, but I would like to
see them go to somewhere like Azerbaijan and see the conditions under which
games are played there,' he said.
'What would they have done if we had been playing in the quarter-finals or
semifinals? Would they (UEFA) have punished him (Raul) in the same way?
'I don't understand what criteria they are using. Now it is very easy for
them to make an example of a player.'
Real Madrid said on Friday they would appeal against the UEFA sanction,
saying it was a stain upon the player's reputation.
Since making his league debut in the 1994/95 season, Raul has not received a
single red card and has only been booked 13 times.
